Jeff's garden has quite a few shadey areas, some were here and some were created by planting trees and with fencing. He especially likes hostas and has planted many over the past few years. They take a few years to really take hold and form big clumps so they're really in the infancy stage right now.

 Coastal redwood
Jeff planted this Coastal Redwood with 2 others the year after we moved into the house. The other two blew over during winter storms. It was just a four foot tall twig when he planted it and its been amazing to watch it turn into a real tree. I'm not sure the plantings underneath will survive the root competition but I guess we'll soon find out. The picture to the right with Roy in it is another view of this same area. Mouseover here to see a photo of the redwood when it was first planted.

This bed was planted last summer on the fence line in the front yard between us and our neighbors to the South. It contains hostas, ligularias, and rhodys.

 Ligularia and hydrangea

This hydrangea spent its first year in a pot on our porch. Now it graces the fence line in the back yard. That's a ligularia, the Rocket, behind it.

 Roy with Japanese maples
This area behind the garage was a jumble of old limbs and trash when we moved into the yard. We cleaned it up, planted grass, redwood trees, and a small raised vegetable bed here. We knew the vegetables were only temporary until the redwood provided shade. Last fall Jeff planted three Japanese maples, and a vine maple and its well on its way to having a woodland feel.

 Ligularia by the front gate
This ligularia has daisy like blooms in late summer. Its growing by the front gate in the shade of an old cherry tree. This is the same bed as the middle picture on the left.
